Doctor warns: Obama taking over psychiatry

In the administration’s latest push to limit the Second Amendment rights of its citizens, the term “mental health” is being bantered about and used as common ground between anti-gun activists and staunch defenders of gun rights.

Sen. Roy Blunt, Missouri Republican and NRA backer, objected to President Obama’s proposals but agreed the “focus should be on mental health.” Others, while proclaiming support for the Second Amendment, propose “a meaningful conversation about mental health,” or that we should “identify people who are mentally ill.” After all, how could anyone support guns in the hands of the mentally ill?

Study: Low Vitamin D Raises Beast Cancer Risks

Women with low levels of vitamin D may face a higher risk of developing breast cancer, according to new research led by the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine.

The study, published online in the journal Cancer Causes and Control, involved 1,200 healthy women and found that those with low blood levels of vitamin D had three times the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer as women with higher levels of the “sunshine vitamin.”

"While the mechanisms by which vitamin D could prevent breast cancer are not fully understood, this study suggests that the association with low vitamin D in the blood is strongest late in the development of the cancer, "said lead researcher Cedric Garland, a family and preventive medicine specialist.

Garland said the findings suggest boosting vitamin D levels may help prevent breast cancer by blocking the development of blood vessels tumors require to grow and spread.

"Based on these data, further investigation of the role of vitamin D in reducing incidence of premenopausal breast cancer, particularly during the late phases of its development, is warranted," he said.

Can Milk Thistle Prevent Skin Cancer?

A compound found in milk thistle, a natural remedy used in traditional healing practices for more than 2,000 years, may offer a new way to prevent skin cancer and heal damage that develops from two types of ultraviolent radiation from sunlight or other sources.

Two University of Colorado Cancer Center studies published this month found that the milk thistle extract, silibinin, kills skin cells mutated by UVA radiation and also protects against damage by UVB radiation.

"When you have a cell affected by UV radiation, you either want to repair it or kill it so that it cannot go on to cause cancer,” said researcher Rajesh Agarwal, a cancer prevention specialist at the CU Cancer Center and professor at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. “We show that silibinin does both."

Snoring: Early Sign of Cardio Risk

Day 37 - Snoring Cures

Snoring is more than just an irritating sleep disorder. New research has found snoring can put you at a greater risk for cardiovascular problems than being overweight, smoking, or having high cholesterol.

Medical investigators at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit have determined snorers are more likely to have thickening or abnormalities in their carotid arteries — the two large blood vessels that supply oxygen to the brain — which are precursors to atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries that leads to many cardiovascular diseases.

"Snoring is more than a bedtime annoyance and it shouldn't be ignored,” said lead researcher Robert Deeb, M.D., with the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford. “Patients need to seek treatment in the same way they would if they had sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.”

Dr. Deeb said the new study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that snoring is not be benign as many believe.

Study: Prostate Cancer Treatment Nearly Always Leads to Sex Woes

A new study shows how important it is for men to carefully consider treatments for early-stage prostate cancer. Fifteen years after surgery or radiation treatment, nearly all of the older men in the study had some problems having sex.

About one-fifth had bladder or bowel trouble, researchers found.

The study doesn't compare these men - who were 70 to 89 at the end of the study - to others who did not treat their cancers or to older men without the disease. At least one study suggests that half that age group has sexual problems even when healthy.

The study isn't a rigorous test of surgery and radiation, but it is the longest follow-up of some men who chose those treatments.

Since early prostate cancers usually don't prove fatal but there are no good ways to tell which ones really need treatment, men must be realistic about side effects they might suffer, said one study leader, Dr. David Penson of Vanderbilt University.

"They need to look at these findings and say, `Oh my gosh, no matter what I choose, I'm going to have some quality-of-life effect and it's probably greater than my doctor is telling me,'" he said.
The study appears in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Parasite Cleansing

by Brenda Watson, ND, CT

SAVE
Parasites occur not only in Third World countries or in those who have travelled extensively. Eighty-five percent of North Americans have at least one form of parasite. Some authorities believe that the true figure may be as high as 95 percent. This means no one is completely immune from parasitic infestation.

What exactly is a parasite? A parasite is defined as any organism that lives on, or in, the body of another organism. In humans, parasites will feed on our cells, the food we eat, and even on the supplements we take. They range in size from microscopic single-celled organisms to tapeworms that can be up to 12 metres in length. Regardless of the size of the parasite, all can cause damage to the human body.

Indian Spice May Stop Diabetes

Researchers in Thailand studied 240 adults with prediabetes (people with high blood sugar, but not yet diabetics) and divided them into two groups. One group was given curcumin supplements six times a day, and the other group was given capsules filled with a placebo.

After nine months, 19 out of the 116-member control group had developed diabetes, but no one in the curcumin-taking group did.

The researchers cautioned that this was a small study, and more research needs to be done. However, turmeric is a popular spice that can easily be added to the diet. Use it in Indian curry, or use small amounts (1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon) to season soups, beans, brown rice, quinoa, or couscous.

N.J. Woman Becomes First In U.S. Diagnosed With New Deer Tick Disease

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A New Jersey woman is lucky to be alive after catching a mysterious illness from a tick bite.

Anna Felix, 81, of Kingwood Township, said she feared her lymphoma had returned or she might have dementia when she started getting weak and confused and lost 30 pounds.
“I remember I couldn’t eat too well. And I started needing help to walk,” Felix told CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez on Friday.

Initial tests were inconclusive, and although she showed symptoms of Lyme disease, Felix tested negative. Lab technicians at Hunterdon Medical Center made a breakthrough discovery when they examined her spinal fluid and found an unusual strain of bacteria they had never seen before.

Parasite Infection: Overview

Infection by intestinal parasitic worms (geohelminths) is widespread throughout the world, affecting hundreds of millions of people. Children are particularly susceptible and typically have the largest number of worms. Three of the most common kinds of worms are roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura) and hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus). These worms live in the intestines and their numbers build up through repeated infection. It is possible to be infected with more than one kind of worm.

A parasite survives by hijacking another organism, robbing it of nutrients and thanking it by leaving behind toxic waste. Obviously, we would be much happier without having these pintsized freeloaders around.

Yet, there are over 100 different types of parasites that can live in human hosts. Since the world's population is becoming more mobile, with US tourists traveling to foreign countries where parasites are prevalent and immigrants moving to the US from these countries, parasitic infections are increasing. The fact is, parasitic infections may have reached epidemic levels in the US and most other countries.

Foods That Kill Intestinal Parasites

Parasites frequently contaminate food and water supplies, promoting illness when ingested. Other modes of transmission include air, insects, animals or other people. Intestinal parasites tax the immune system and deplete the body of essential nutrients. To return the body to a state of equilibrium, it is important to consume natural foods that contain anti-parasitic properties. The diet should also be high in fiber to improve colon function, and maintain a suitable intestinal flora (beneficial bacteria).

Gut Friendly Foods

Parasitic infections show up in the human body when the immune system is compromised. This is frequently associated with an overgrowth of bad bacteria, and a lower percentage of good bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus. Include plain yogurt enriched with healthy bacteria in your diet to replenish intestinal flora. According to Larry Trivieri and John W. Anderson in their book "Alternative Medicine: the Definitive Guide," fiber-rich ingredients are essential to flush out parasites embedded in the intestinal wall. To help remove a parasitic infestation, use a combination of pumpkin seeds, papaya extract, flaxseeds, beet root, citrus pectin and psyllium husks.

Michael Savage: Don't trust feds on flu shot

“Did Harry Reid take a flu shot? Did Barack Obama take a flu shot? Did Barack Obama’s lovely family take a flu shot? Did Joe Biden take a flu shot?” Savage asked.

“Which of the mandarins took the flu shot?”

He explained that he was talking specifically about vaccines and was not advocating the avoidance of all pharmaceuticals.

Known for his many books on herbal medicines, Savage acknowledged he has benefited from “an awful lot of life-saving regular medicines.”

“The flu vaccine?” he asked. “No, I wouldn’t take it.”

Savage noted “not everything your government tells you is true.”

“So it’s good to have a cynic in radio who questions authority,” he said.

Say No to Thimerosal, Say No to the Flu Vaccine

Saying no to vaccines in the face of the gale wind of propaganda and governmentally supported vaccine campaigns is high treason punishable to the point of having your kids taken away if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

True medicine cries out against vaccines and all the harm they are doing to children and people around the globe, but we have medical authorities claiming them to offer deliverance when in reality they offer little of anything but further toxic attacks on the body and immune system.

Medical truth is obviously against deliberately poisoning people, but don't tell that to anyone at the FDA whose staff falls all over itself to promote the most dangerous drugs ever known to mankind. Vaccines are loaded with crude materials that will never make anyone well. Poisons usually have the habit of poisoning people and the amount of mercury in the influenza vaccine is dangerous no matter what these un-trustable medical officials say.

Mercury is much more toxic than lead but there is not a doctor in the world stupid or crazy enough to inject lead into children's veins, yet there are plenty who will gladly with a smile inject mercury.

Eat Fish Twice a Week

The September 12, 2012 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association included an analysis by researchers from Greece addressing the benefits of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation for the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Their conclusion, that fish oils do not offer significant cardiovascular health benefits, flies in the face of results from numerous individual controlled studies.

The findings are complicated by the nature of such reviews, where studies being assessed commonly use different methods across different populations to measure at least slightly different outcomes. Only rarely can clinically useful direction be taken with confidence from this type of analysis;
however, the need for additional study is clear.

I hold to my longstanding recommendation to consume two to three servings of cold-water fish per week.

Rice, Potato, and Tomato May Be As Inflammatory As Wheat

In this article a key question is brought to the forefront, namely, is eating wheat and gluten free enough to obtain optimal health?  The mass market has done quite a good job of accommodating the gluten & wheat free movement by providing an increasingly wide number of good tasting and seeming nutritious "whole grain" products.  But are whole grains like rice, or other common wheat substitute flours like potato, really as good for us as we think?

The question can be answered in a number of ways, and it is important to keep things in perspective. As idealists, we might ask ourselves: "What is the perfect diet?" But as realists there is always a sliding scale of lesser evils that we exchange for the experience of enjoying our foods and obtaining the comfort they readily provide. Take a grain of sea salt as you read this exposé, as it is intended to illuminate how in some cases eliminating wheat and gluten will not be enough to overcome nagging inflammatory problems like osteoarthritis, or maybe more serious treatment refractory and idiopathic health conditions.
