An Alzheimer’s drug could prevent dementia before symptoms show, with research suggesting it could clear toxic brain plaques in just three months.

Trontinemab, a medicine given as a monthly infusion, will be offered to about 1,600 people with no memory problems who are at high risk of the disease to see whether it can stave off symptoms.

Scientists said the landmark trial could be a “game changer”, raising the prospect of “statins for the brain” being routinely offered to people in mid-life.

The phase III trial – the final pre-approval testing stage for a new treatment – will use blood tests to identify those most likely to benefit from taking part.

4th of July: Fireworks Can Cause Injuries, Fires ─ Leave Them to the Pros

 

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public firework show put on by professionals.

The Fourth of July is right around the corner ─ a day synonymous with summer fun and, most of all, fireworks. While fireworks are beautiful and impressive, lighting up the sky and drawing plenty of “oohs” and “aahs,” they also come with real safety risks. The American Red Cross offers important tips to help you enjoy fireworks and have a fun, safe Independence Day celebration.

SERIOUS INJURIES Fireworks hurt thousands of people annually, with many injuries serious enough to require medical care. Children and young adults make up a significant portion of those who are hurt.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports as many as 14,700 people were injured by fireworks in 2024. Sadly, there were also 11 people who died in fireworks-related incidents. Burns were the most common injury.

WATCH OUT FOR SPARKLERS Most injuries from fireworks happen when people try to use professional-grade, homemade or other illegal fireworks or explosives. However, even sparklers can cause significant injuries.

Everywhere you look around the 4th of July you can see young children waving sparklers. But did you know they burn hot enough to melt some metals? They can set clothing on fire and children have been burned severely by dropping sparklers on their leg or foot. Consider celebrating with glow sticks, noise makers or silly string instead.

FIREWORKS AND WILDFIRES Every year, fireworks are responsible for tens of thousands of fires across the country, especially in areas where wildfire risks exist ─ dry vegetation, low humidity, windy days. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks started more than 32,000 fires in 2023, including more than 27,000 “outside” fires as well as structure and vehicle fires. And to no surprise, July 4th sees twice as many fires as on other days with stray sparks causing nearby dry vegetation to burn.

LEAVE IT TO THE PROS Even organized fireworks shows can be a wildfire threat, but the majority of injuries and fires attributed to fireworks are caused by individuals who attempt to light them on their own. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals.

If you choose to set fireworks off at home, follow these safety steps:

  1. Have a bucket of water, garden hose or fire extinguisher handy. Consider wetting down the surrounding grass and other vegetation before lighting your fireworks.
  2. Don’t light fireworks on windy nights.
  3. Douse used fireworks with water to make sure they are completely extinguished
  4. Never give fireworks to small children.
  5. Never let children use fireworks, sparklers or firecrackers unsupervised.
  6. Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials. 
  7. Always follow the instructions on the packaging. 
  8. Make sure the person lighting fireworks always wears eye protection. 
  9. Light only one firework at a time.
  10. Never attempt to relight "a dud." 
  11. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets. 
  12. Never use fireworks around pets, keep pets indoors. Exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns or trauma, and many pets are also fearful of loud noises and can become lost, scared or disoriented.

More than 100 people have been sickened by a parasite across more than a dozen states and officials are investigating to track down the source. 

The CDC reports 145 Americans in 17 states have contracted the cyclospora parasite from an unknown source and 20 have been hospitalized. No recent travel has been reported among the patients, leading officials to believe the source is food. 

The cyclospora parasite causes cyclosporiasis, an infection that leads to diarrhea, severe cramping, nausea and vomiting and fatigue.

There is a long list of benefits people can reap from just a simple walk. 

Beyond getting your heart rate up and your metabolism firing, the simple habit of walking has been linked to better cognitive health, a lower risk of heart disease and improved emotional wellbeing.

But perhaps more important than time spent on the pavement, experts say, is walking speed. And depending on your age, there are certain benchmarks you should be able to hit.

Elizabeth Vogstrom, a physician assistant at EVOyouthful in Chicago specializing in longevity-focused care, told the Daily Mail that gait speed is a key indicator of general health as a person ages.

‘When I see patients experiencing declines in energy, mobility, muscle mass, or overall fitness, walking ability and walking tolerance are often among the first functional measures that begin to change,’ Vogstrom told the Daily Mail.

‘A person can have normal laboratory values and still be experiencing declines in strength, endurance, mobility, balance, or cardiovascular fitness,’ she said. ‘Walking speed often reveals those changes before they become obvious in daily life.’

As a general rule, in your 20s and 30s you should be able to walk a mile in 13 to 15 minutes at a brisk pace of about 4.6 mph, Vogstrom said, citing a 2022 report in the Journal of Sports Sciences that indicated benchmark 'brisk' walking speeds for different ages. 

In your 40s, aim to walk a mile in 14 to 16 minutes at a pace of 4.3 mph. In your 50s, the goal is a mile in 15 to 17 minutes at 4 mph.

Nitrate Supplementation: Beetroot Juice May Improve Postmenopausal Women’s Heart Health

Can a glass of beetroot juice a day keep the doctor away? According to recent research published in Frontiers in Nutrition, it just may help postmenopausal women avoid a visit to the cardiologist.

That’s because beet juice helps stimulate the production of nitric oxide, a vital chemical messenger that promotes circulation and blood flow. This is important for postmenopausal women considering they often face an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and increased blood pressure.

So what exactly did the study find? Let’s find out.

Study Results

A team of researchers from Pennsylvania State University, Edith Cowan University, the University of Western Australia, Wake Forest University and the University of Leeds sought to determine if nitrate supplementation in the form of beetroot juice could help reduce heart disease risk factors in postmenopausal women.

The study authors noted that “cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women, with increased risk following menopause. Dietary intake of beetroot juice and other plant-based nitrate-rich foods is a promising non-pharmacological strategy for increasing systemic nitric oxide and improving endothelial function in elderly populations.”

To see if that promise worked in practice, they conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover clinical trial on postmenopausal women to see the effects of nitrate supplementation through drinking beet juice had on “resting macrovascular endothelial function and endothelial resistance to whole-arm ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury at two distinct stages of menopause.”

Women were broken up into an early-postmenopausal group (last menstrual period one to six years ago) and a late-postmenopausal group (more than six years since last menstrual period). Each group had women consume nitrate-rich beetroot juice and nitrate-depleted beet juice every day for a week.

The study participants drank nitrate-rich beet juice every morning for seven day, and then after several weeks, they drank beetroot juice without nitrate.

Researchers found that the nitrate-rich beet juice boosted blood flow compared to the placebo without nitrate. However, the researchers noted that the benefits to the blood vessels went away after 24 hours of drinking beet juice.

Ultimately, they concluded that drinking beet juice daily can help protect heart health in postmenopausal women, but it’s dependent on the timing of supplementation since the effects wear off after 24 hours.

Thus, in order to get consistent heart-boosting benefits from drinking nitrate-rich beetroot juice, postmenopausal women should make it part of their daily routine.

The Ebola outbreak that's raging in Africa could rival the outbreak that hit West Africa a decade ago, resulting in upwards of 20,000 cases and 4,000 deaths within the next three months alone.

These projections appear in new analyses from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which modeled just how widespread the current outbreak could get.

Both Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda are racing to contain this outbreak, which was declared an international health emergency by the the World Health Organization in May.
